A small purifier that claims big-room coverage

I’ve been using the ECOSELF HAP604 air purifier for a bit now, mainly in my bedroom and occasionally moving it to the living room. On paper, it sounds pretty strong: HEPA H13 filter, 1500 ft² coverage, 20 dB sleep mode, and all the usual certifications (ETL, FCC, EPA, CARB). In reality, I’d say it’s a compact purifier that works best for small to medium rooms, not some magic box that will clean your entire house at once.

Out of the box, it’s very straightforward. The only slightly weird thing is that the power adapter is stored inside the filter compartment, so you need to open it up before first use. If you don’t read the little note, you’ll probably spend a minute wondering where the cable is. Setup otherwise is just: plug it in, hold power, pick a fan speed, done. No app, no Wi‑Fi, nothing fancy.

My use case: I have a cat, a dusty old apartment, and I’m a light sleeper. I mainly wanted something to reduce dust on surfaces and help with pet dander and mild allergies at night. Before this, I used a slightly bigger purifier from a different brand, so I had something to compare noise and airflow against. I ran this one for several hours a day, sometimes on high during the day and on sleep mode at night.

Overall first impression: it’s a pretty solid basic purifier for a bedroom or office. It’s quiet, simple to use, and the filter seems decent. But the 1500 ft² claim feels optimistic, and there are a couple of small design and usability details that could be better. It gets the job done, but it’s not some miracle machine.

Is it good value for money or should you look elsewhere?

☆☆☆☆☆ ★★★★★

Value really depends on what you expect out of an air purifier. The ECOSELF HAP604 gives you true HEPA H13 filtration, quiet sleep mode, basic but useful features (timer, child lock, filter reminder), and a compact footprint. For a bedroom or small office, that’s pretty decent. If the price sits in the lower to mid-range compared to other HEPA purifiers, I’d say it offers good value, especially if noise levels are important to you.

Where the value becomes more questionable is if you take the 1500 ft² marketing claim too seriously. If you buy this thinking it will handle a huge living room plus open kitchen, you’ll probably feel underpowered and might end up needing a second unit or a larger model. In that scenario, the money could have gone straight into a bigger purifier with a higher clean air delivery rate. So I’d say the best value is when you use it the way it actually performs best: one unit per bedroom, or one for a closed office or nursery.

You also have to factor in filter replacement costs. Since ECOSELF pushes their own official filters, you’re tied to whatever price and availability they decide. If the filters are reasonably priced and easy to find on Amazon, then long-term cost is fine. If they’re expensive or often out of stock, the value drops fast, because a purifier with a dirty filter is basically a noisy fan. Before committing, I’d check how much the replacement filters cost and how often people say they need to change them.

Compared to other basic HEPA purifiers I’ve used, this one sits in a comfortable middle: not the cheapest, not the fanciest. No smart features, no air quality display, but it’s quiet and does the core job. If you want simple, quiet, and compact, it’s good value. If you want advanced features, app control, or something truly strong for big rooms, your money is probably better spent on a higher-end model, even if it costs more upfront.

Compact tower design with a small footprint

☆☆☆☆☆ ★★★★★

Design-wise, the HAP604 is a small white tower, roughly 7.17" x 7.17" and about 14" tall. It doesn’t take much floor or desk space, which is nice if your room is already crowded. It’s light too, around 3.6 pounds, so you can easily move it from bedroom to living room with one hand. The look is pretty neutral: matte-ish white plastic, venting all around the sides, controls on top. It blends in, which I personally prefer over some flashy gadget aesthetic.

The 360° air intake design means it pulls air from all around its base and pushes cleaned air out the top. In practice, that helps when you place it in the middle or corner of a room, since it’s not just sucking from one side. During my use, I noticed that having it at least a bit away from walls (like 8–12 inches) did make it feel more effective, especially on the lower fan speeds. If you shove it right up against a wall, you’re basically blocking part of that intake.

The control panel at the top is simple: touch buttons with small icons and indicator lights. You can see at a glance what speed you’re on and if the timer or child lock is active. The 7-color light ring is more of a mood light than anything useful for air quality. You can have it cycle, pick a color, or turn it off. I ended up turning it off at night because I don’t like extra light when sleeping. At least they gave the option to kill it entirely, which some brands forget.

On the downside, the plastics feel a bit thin. It doesn’t feel like it’s going to break immediately, but if you drop it or have kids knocking it over, I wouldn’t be shocked if it scuffs or cracks. Also, because it’s so light, it’s pretty easy to tip if someone bumps into it. A slightly wider base or a bit more weight at the bottom would have made it feel more stable. Still, for a basic home purifier, the design is practical and space-saving, even if it doesn’t feel premium.

Noise levels, sleep mode, and everyday usability

☆☆☆☆☆ ★★★★★

Comfort-wise, the main point is noise, and here the HAP604 does pretty well. The brand claims 20 dB in sleep mode. I don’t have a sound meter, but subjectively, sleep mode is very quiet – more like a soft air hum than a fan noise. I’m a light sleeper and usually get annoyed by fans, and I could sleep with this on without it bothering me. It’s quieter than the older purifier I was using before, especially on the lowest setting.

On medium and high, you obviously hear it, but the noise is more of a steady whoosh, not a rattly or high-pitched sound. I could still watch TV or work with it running on medium in the background. High is noticeable but not painful; it’s what I’d use for a few hours when I want to quickly refresh the air, then drop back to sleep or low when I’m just maintaining. So in practice, I ended up doing: high in the evening for 1–2 hours, then sleep mode overnight.

The controls are simple, so using it day to day is easy. The timer is handy if you don’t want it running 24/7 – I sometimes set it for 4 hours while I’m out. The child lock is just a button combo that disables the touch panel, useful if you have kids or a curious cat walking over it. The ambient light is more of a gimmick for me; I turned it off most of the time. At least there’s no loud beeps or annoying startup sounds – it powers on quietly, which I appreciate in a bedroom.

Overall, from a comfort and usability standpoint, it fits well into a normal daily routine. You don’t need to babysit it, it doesn’t scream at you with noise, and the controls are straightforward. My only small gripe is that on high, in a very quiet room, you will hear it clearly – so if you’re extremely sensitive to any fan noise, you’ll probably just stick to low or sleep mode and accept slightly slower cleaning.

Build quality and how it feels over time

☆☆☆☆☆ ★★★★★

Durability is a bit harder to judge in a short test, but I can at least talk about build quality and feel. The unit is very light, mostly thin plastic, and that’s both good and bad. Good because it’s easy to move around and doesn’t feel bulky. Bad because it doesn’t give you that solid, tough impression. When you tap the body, it sounds a bit hollow, and if you press too hard on some parts, there’s a slight flex.

The filter compartment opens and closes with a twist mechanism at the bottom. That part feels okay – not super sturdy, but not flimsy either. I opened it a few times to check the filter and never had trouble getting it back on straight. The top control panel hasn’t shown any weird behavior: buttons still respond, no random glitches or lights. The fan inside hasn’t rattled or made odd noises so far, which is a good sign that the motor and internal assembly are at least decently put together.

Given the weight and materials, I wouldn’t treat this like some rugged device. If you have kids or pets that like to bump into things, it’s easy to imagine it tipping over. I don’t think a single fall from a low table would instantly destroy it, but repeated abuse probably would. It’s more of a “leave it in a corner and don’t mess with it too much” kind of product. Also, because of the white color, I can see it picking up scuffs or marks over time if you drag it around on the floor.

Long-term, the real durability question will be motor life and filter availability. The brushless motor is a good sign for longevity and energy efficiency, but we only see that after a year or two. ECOSELF does offer a 30-day money-back and 1+ year warranty with lifetime tech support, which at least gives a bit of backup if something fails early. My gut feeling: as long as you’re not rough with it and you change filters on time, it should last a few years. Just don’t expect tank-like build quality.

Real-world performance vs the 1500 ft² marketing claim

☆☆☆☆☆ ★★★★★

Let’s talk about what matters: how well it actually cleans the air. ECOSELF claims it covers up to 1500 ft², with 5 air changes per hour in a 300 ft² room. Based on the size of the unit and the airflow I felt, I’d say it’s honestly more comfortable in the 200–350 ft² range if you want it to really make a difference. I tried it in my roughly 250 ft² bedroom and in a more open living room/kitchen area that’s closer to 450–500 ft².

In the bedroom, running it on medium or high for a couple of hours did reduce that stale smell and cut down on visible dust settling on surfaces over a few days. I also noticed my nose felt less stuffy in the morning, which tells me the HEPA filter is at least doing something with the dust and pet dander. I don’t have lab sensors, but just from wiping furniture and how my sinuses felt, I’d say it’s pretty solid for a closed bedroom. On sleep mode, it obviously moves less air, but it’s still enough to keep things fresh overnight if you already ran it on a higher speed earlier in the evening.

In the larger open area, it helped a bit, but it’s clearly not built to handle a big open-plan space by itself. Cooking smells took a while to fade if I relied only on this purifier. Compared to a bigger unit I own, this one just doesn’t push as much air. So yes, technically it might “cover” 1500 ft² in some marketing sense, but if you expect strong, quick purification in a large room, you’ll be a bit underwhelmed. It’s more like: it can exist in a 1500 ft² home, not that it dominates that entire space.

Where it does well is steady, everyday cleaning in a single room: bedroom, office, nursery, that sort of thing. It’s not magic against strong odors or heavy smoke, but for dust, pet hair, and typical apartment air, it gets the job done. I’d just ignore the 1500 ft² number and think of it as a solid bedroom/office purifier instead of a whole-house solution.

What you actually get and how it’s set up

☆☆☆☆☆ ★★★★★

In the box, you get the purifier, the power adapter (hidden in the filter compartment), a pre-installed filter, and a basic manual. That’s it. No remote, no extra filter, no fancy accessories. For the price point, that’s pretty standard. The manual is clear enough: explains the fan speeds, timer, child lock, and what the filter indicator light means. Nothing complicated, which I liked.

The purifier comes with the 3-stage H13 HEPA filter already installed, but you must open the bottom to pull out the adapter. The filter itself is a cylinder style, which matches the 360° air intake design. ECOSELF insists on using only their official replacement filters. That usually means you’re locked into their ecosystem, so the long-term cost will depend a lot on how much those replacement filters go for and how often you need to swap them. There’s a filter indicator, but like most purifiers, it’s time-based, not some smart sensor that measures actual filter clogging.

Controls are all on the top: power button, fan speed, timer, light control, and child lock. No touch lag, everything responds quickly. You can choose different fan speeds and set timers (handy if you want it to run a few hours and then shut off). There’s also a 7-color ambient light you can cycle through or turn off completely, which is good if you hate glowing gadgets at night. It’s not a smart device, so if you’re looking for app control, room air quality graphs, or voice assistant stuff, this isn’t it.

In practice, the feature set is basic but covers the essentials: adjustable fan, sleep mode, timer, lock, filter reminder. I never felt like I was missing some critical function for normal home use. But if you’re into smart home automation or want to see actual PM2.5 numbers on a screen, this model will feel a bit old-school. For someone who just wants to plug it in and forget about it, it’s fine.

Filter quality, allergies, and pet dander in daily use

☆☆☆☆☆ ★★★★★

The HAP604 uses a 3-stage H13 HEPA filter, and that’s the main reason I was interested in it. H13 means it’s supposed to capture 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns, which covers things like pollen, pet dander, and fine dust. After running it daily for a couple of weeks, I opened the unit to check the filter. You could clearly see a layer of dust and some cat hair on the outer part, which is exactly what I wanted it to trap instead of letting it settle everywhere else.

I have mild dust and pet allergies, nothing extreme, but enough that I wake up with a stuffy nose if the air is bad. With this purifier running in the bedroom, I noticed my nose was less blocked in the morning and I coughed less when I first woke up. It wasn’t night-and-day life changing, but it was noticeably better compared to not using anything. Compared to my previous purifier (slightly bigger, similar HEPA rating), I’d say it’s in the same ballpark for allergy relief in a small room, as long as you keep doors and windows mostly closed.

Odors are where it’s just okay. It helps with light smells – like general mustiness or mild pet odor – but it’s not super strong against heavier stuff like cooking grease or smoke. There’s probably some carbon layer in the filter, but it’s clearly not a heavy-duty odor filter. After frying food, I needed to open windows and run this on high for a good while to notice a difference. So if your main issue is strong smells, I’d look for something with a thicker activated carbon filter. For dust and dander, though, this one is decent.

One thing to keep in mind: ECOSELF pushes using only their official filters. If replacement filters end up being pricey or hard to find, the long-term effectiveness becomes a cost question. The filter indicator helps you know when to swap, but like I said earlier, it’s time-based. If you live in a very dusty place or have multiple pets, you might need to replace sooner than the light suggests. Overall, in day-to-day use, the purifier does what it should for particles and basic allergies, but it’s not a powerhouse for serious odor or smoke problems.

Pros

  • Very quiet sleep mode, suitable for light sleepers
  • True HEPA H13 filter that handles dust and pet dander well in small/medium rooms
  • Simple controls with timer, child lock, and optional ambient light

Cons

  • 1500 ft² coverage claim feels unrealistic for strong purification
  • Light plastic build that tips easily and doesn’t feel very robust
  • Locked into official ECOSELF filters, which can affect long-term cost

Conclusion

Editor's rating

☆☆☆☆☆ ★★★★★

The ECOSELF HAP604 is a straightforward, compact air purifier that works well in the kind of room most people actually use these things in: bedrooms, small offices, nurseries. The noise levels are low, especially in sleep mode, the HEPA H13 filter does a decent job on dust and pet dander, and the controls are simple enough that you don’t need to be tech-savvy to use it. If your main goals are less dust on furniture, slightly easier breathing with mild allergies, and a quiet device you can sleep next to, it checks those boxes.

Where it falls short is mainly around expectations and marketing. The 1500 ft² coverage claim is optimistic; in a big open space, it feels underpowered. The build quality is okay but clearly plastic and light, so it doesn’t feel premium or super tough. No smart features, no air quality readout, and filter lock-in to ECOSELF’s own replacements also matter if you like to compare long-term costs. Overall, I’d recommend it to someone who wants a no-nonsense bedroom purifier and doesn’t care about apps or fancy screens. If you need serious odor control, heavy smoke filtration, or true whole-living-room coverage, I’d skip this and look at a larger, more powerful unit, even if that means spending more.
